An Extraordinary Life
I wrote this book because I think some pretty darn funny things, as well as touching things, have happened to me throughout the years. You might see it differently. What I’ve found when telling people my stories is that they spark stories of their own.
I think everyone leads an extraordinary life: some just don’t know it. When I ask people how they are, the usual response is, “Fine” or “Work, home and church, that’s all.” I believe if we focus on the mundane, we will live a life of boring sameness. Life will pass by in a blur of laundry, grocery shopping, and cleaning the house. I’ve still had some pretty funny things happen while I’m doing laundry, shopping or cleaning the house, but I think you know what I mean. If we pay attention to the things that are not ordinary, we all live extraordinary lives. I’ve actually had people tell me, sounding bored out of their minds that yes, (sigh) they’ve been to Italy. They just didn’t know what all the fuss was about. Are you serious?!!! I’m not even going to bore you with an explanation of what’s so fabulous about Italy. The point isn’t even Italy. The point is that we all do the mundane almost every day of our lives. It’s when the specks of “other” show up that we need to pay attention.
There are more than fifty stories in this book. Believe me, I could write fifty more and not even begin to cover the craziness of my life. Let me set the record straight. I lead a very interesting life, some boring days to be sure, but interesting, nonetheless. I believe it is up to us to make our own lives extraordinary. That doesn’t necessarily mean tap dancing on the head of a pin, but it does mean appreciating a break in the monotony. I hope you enjoy reading some of my monotony breakers, and I hope they spark some stories of your own to help you realize and appreciate your own extraordinary life.
